CCTP stands for Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol, a novel interoperability solution developed by Circle, the company behind the USDC stablecoin. How Does CCTP Work?
Traditional cross-chain transfers often involve wrapped assets. For example, moving USDC from Ethereum to Avalanche may require locking the real USDC in a smart contract and minting a wrapped version on the target chain. This method creates risk — especially if the bridge is compromised.
CCTP takes a different approach:
1.) The original USDC tokens are burned (destroyed) on the source chain.
2.) Circle then verifies the burn event.
3.) The same amount of USDC is minted natively on the destination chain.
Because Circle controls USDC’s issuance on multiple chains, this system is trust-minimized, faster, and much safer.
